St. Nikolai Memorial

Ruins of a Gothic church preserved as a World War II anti-war memorial.

Formerly a grand Neo-Gothic church whose spire was briefly the tallest building in the world (1874–1876), St. Nikolai was destroyed during WWII air raids under Operation Gomorrah. Today, the preserved spire and ruined walls stand as a memorial against war, complete with a glass elevator ascending the 147-meter spire.
